KirisameSoup's BTA! Server

About

As the name suggests, KirisameSoup’s BTA! Server is a Better than Adventure! Server created and maintained by me, KirisameSoup (雾雨蘑菇汤).

I started playing Better than Adventure! during August 2025 (I have briefly tried it out back in 2024), and has being deeply fascinated by this mod since. After playing in singleplayer for about a month, at the end of August I joined RedWyvern’s BTA! Server, and started playing there mostly regularly for about 4 months.

RedWyvern’s server has gave me a really beautiful experience. During the 4 months, I have met so many sweet people over there, and despite the simple nature of the game BTA!, those friendships felt special to me.

During one of the occational moments I shared in BTA! with the server owner RedWyvern themself, we had a chat about server hosting. Other than RedWyvern just being a really likeable individual in general, he also inspired me a lot on the topic of server hosting…

It is really sad finding the traces of your memories deleted…

Prior to playing Better than Adventure! – which is a mod of Minecraft – I was like many of you, a player of Minecraft. During my time playing modern Minecraft, I have stumbled upon a server, (which I will not name for now) and have played over there for a good several years.

At the time, it was a really sweet experience. I have met many lovely players, and built our towns and engraved (no pun intended) our memories into the server… until the owner decided to reset the server world, and accidentally lose the old world forever.

Until recently, old players were still occasionally expressing how badly they want to see that old world with all their memories, even if just for once. But it is forever impossible now.

In the time that I – and some of my friends, according to them – have played Minecraft, we’ve all encountered multiple times when a server owner just decides to reset or restart, likely to boost server activity – for a short while, at least.

It is a priceless feeling when the memories lives on

These unfortunate experiences, is why I really resonated with RedWyvern on his thoughts on how important it is to maintain the memories of players.

Minecraft, or likewise, BTA!, in the end are just games. Players are going to have their lives outside of the game, chasing bigger goals of their lives. But desipite being just games, the good times and sweet memories they had together in the games are as real as realife can be.

I truly believe that, when player of the game and exploreres of their lives, decides to look back – maybe to reconnect with some old friendships, it is the job of us server owners to ensure that when they attempt to log back on, everything will still be there.

I wish I can keep this promise with my BTA! server.

The lack of a Chinese BTA! server

During my time playing on RedWyvern’s server, I have also realized an issue that I could ignore less and less each day: the lack of a BTA! server for Chinese players.

Now pardon me that, since I have kind of discovers BTA! by my own, I haven’t really interacted with the Chinese BTA! community for quite a long time, I didn’t even know that it existed for a decent while xD.

Just because of personal interest though, I have put in my effort to supporting a Chinese language pack for BTA!, which funnily enough is what lead me to the Chinese BTA! community (one’d probably expect the other way around, lol).

After briefly mentioning RedWyvern’s server in the group chat, many members of the community showed interest to joining the server, and one of which actually stuck around. But, since RedWyvern’s server is located in Europe, and that English is the main language there, many of them either didn’t actually join or didn’t stuck around.

Another problem is a problem of the BTA! server executable itself: currently in version 7.3_04, the server process uses a predefined font.txt file to decide which characters are allowed in the server chat, and as a result, characters used by many languages, including Chinese Hanzi, are not allowed. This made hosting BTA! servers for Chinese really non-ideal.

All those reasons together has convinced me to host a server that provides Chinese players a playable game experience, that they otherwise would unlikely have had in BTA! multiplayer.

Despite me with very little experiences in Java, the language BTA! and Minecraft is developed in, with common knowledge I’ve aquired from other programming ecosystems I have managed to quickly fix the character issue. And after that, I have purchased the server hardware and had since being operating this server till today :D.

The Future: What can still be achieved?

Now, despite the stable community we have, BTA! is really not even borderline well-known in China. Despite of me obviously wanting the Chinese BTA! community to grow, in the mean time, I’d also want to explore more possibilities that can be achieved with the resources that I have.

Currenlty, I want to attempt to use this server as a bridge to connect the Chinese BTA! community with the rest of the world. Despite a small portion of us that are capable of communicating and integrating with the English-speaking BTA! community, many of us are still unknown to the wider community. It is not unheard of to see people in the BTA! discord being genuinly surprised that a Chinese community even existed for BTA!!

Having a channel for the Chinese and English-speaking communities of BTA!, I believe, will spark a lot of new ideas for both sides, and it is generally interesting (and sometimes wholesome) to see people from different cultures connecting with each other for a shared love.

There are two obvious challenges: the language barrier, and the barrier between the different internet ecosystem as a result of the Chinese Great Fire Wall.

I have yet to be able to answer these questions, but I’m planning to experiment with setting up an independent XMPP server and chat-room, while also providing a browser based XMPP client, to hopefully overcome the barrier between QQ and Discord. In the mean time, I’ll also look for the possibility of implementing a language translation feature for the chat-room, and integrate the XMPP chat-room into the BTA! server chat…

But before then, we unfortunately have to live with those two barriers :(.

If you have any suggestions, or anything in general you want to say about the server, please feel free to contact me! I sincerely appreciate anyone taking their time to care for little things like these <3!
